Founded by local residents who wanted to provide emergency care for their community, Montclair Ambulance Unit has been the dedicated 911 ambulance service for Montclair, New Jersey since 1953. Today MAU remains an independent, nonprofit EMS agency serving Montclair around the clock and Cedar Grove during the day. We also provide mutual aid to surrounding communities when we’re needed.

In any medical emergency, call 911 immediately. 

We are a basic life support or BLS service staffed by more than 70 paid, professional EMTs. In fact, every member of our team, including our admin staff is an EMT. EMTs are trained to handle a wide range of emergencies, from cardiac events and trauma to allergic reactions and respiratory distress. If we need paramedics, they’re dispatched from local hospitals and accompany our crews if needed during transport.

No – MAU was founded in 1953 as an independent, nonprofit agency and remains that way today.   

No – MAU is proudly staffed by more than 70 paid, career EMTs. 

No – Montclair Township is supportive of our work and provides our operating insurance, the use of a building and vehicle fuel. Everything else – from payroll to medical equipment, ambulances to toilet paper – is paid for by the nonprofit.

Our annual operating budget is about $2.6M. Payroll expenses make up about 75%, and roughly align with billing revenue. The other 25% comes from fundraising, grant applications, events, ambulance standbys, and CPR classes.

Montclair Ambulance Unit bills your insurance provider directly for services rendered. Any questions about costs or coverage can be directed to our billing service at 866-624-0900. 

Yes, we offer standby services for community events, large gatherings, and special occasions where having trained EMS personnel on site provides an added layer of safety. To request a standby unit, view our Services page or contact us in advance so we can confirm availability and discuss the details of your event. 

MAU provides daytime EMS in Cedar Grove from 6am to 6pm seven days a week.

No. Because we’re a state-licensed, billing agency, all of our EMTs must be at least 18. We do not offer initial EMT training.

Usually! We hire certified EMTs who are at least 18 years old. Our preference is for staff who are here year ’round. New hires start as per-diem employees and can apply for full-time roles as they become available. Visit our Careers page for openings and information.
