Montclair Ambulance Unit provides daytime service to Cedar Grove, NJ
In 2023 Montclair Ambulance Unit won a bid to provide 911 ambulance service to Cedar Grove Township every day from 6am to 6pm for three years. This three-way partnership among MAU, Cedar Grove Township and the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad provides an ambulance staffed with two MAU EMTs stationed at the CGARS building every day. Montclair Ambulance Unit provides this service an addition to its around-the-clock 911 ambulance service to Montclair.
During the first year of the partnership, Montclair Ambulance Unit responded to 852 911 ambulance calls from the Cedar Grove station. Additionally, MAU crews responded to 119 mutual aid calls into Cedar Grove from the Montclair station. In total we responded to 971 911 ambulance calls in Cedar Grove in the first year.
The nature of the ambulance calls ranged from lift assists and medical issues to several motor vehicle crashes and fire standbys. MAU also proudly participated in community events in Cedar Grove and delivered two babies.
During MAU’s first year of service to Cedar Grove we responded to:
-
202 sick people
-
108 people with breathing problems
-
102 falls
-
50 psychiatric issues
-
20 cardiac arrests
-
2 childbirths
Our average response time in Cedar Grove, from dispatch to on scene, is just 5.2 minutes. That is 42% faster than the national average and 62% faster than the average response time in Essex County.
For more than 70 years Montclair Ambulance Unit and Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad have helped each other when the need arises. In 2023 alone, MAU responded to 398 mutual aid 911 ambulance calls in 22 towns. Montclair Ambulance Unit has always been there when our neighbors needed support.
Montclair Ambulance Unit expects to respond to more than 5,500 911 ambulance calls in 2024. Montclair’s sole 911 EMS agency is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization staffed by 50 career EMTs. MAU is not a department of Montclair Township and is not part of the Montclair Fire Department. Insurance billing roughly covers staffing, while other expenses are covered by fundraising, community CPR and other education classes, special event standbys and emergency management services.
An extremely data-oriented agency, Montclair Ambulance Unit regularly shares statistics, news and milestones with the public on social media @montclairems. MAU’s leadership team of six emergency management professionals encourages the community to reach out to schedule a tour, meet our staff and learn more about how we operate.
Without the support of our community, we couldn’t provide the prompt, professional, reliable emergency medical services residents expect and deserve, and we are so grateful. Thank you for welcoming us into the Cedar Grove community!
